As part of those game successes, the team swept the ODAC Player of the Week Awards as well (full story).  The Generals’ entire offensive line, comprised of senior Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster), junior John Fitzgibbons (Martinsville, Va./Martinsville), sophomore Mike Stefanelli (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) and first-years Bobby Jones (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) and Connor Hollenbeck (Alpharetta, Ga./Alpharetta) earned offensive player of the week recognition for W&L’s 49-14 win over Catholic University on Friday evening.  Additionally, sophomore defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) was named the defensive player of the week for the third time in the last four weeks.

Finally, this coming Saturday the Generals take on Hampden-Sydney for what amounts to the ODAC title (full story).  In 118 seasons of football, Washington and Lee has won just seven conference championships,  including just three ODAC titles in 35 years.  However, a win against Hampden-Sydney would give W&L its second conference title in the last five seasons.

Kick-off will be at 10:00 a.m. Pacific at a venue to be determined. We are currently speaking with a number of possible venues on the Westside, but we would welcome any suggestions for venues from the Chapter. In order to televise the game the venue must have a television or projector that can connect to a computer, as most games are streamed over the Internet through America One.

UPDATE (10/15/2010): We’ve finalized the location and will be at Q’s Billiard Club in West LA.  Q’s is a great sports bar that is located on Wilshire Blvd near the 405. We will have our own space reserved with a large screen TV andsurround sound to enjoy the game. Q’s also has a large menu and a full bar, and the Chapter will provide snacks for the game.

I hope this letter finds you well and that you enjoyed the Holiday Season and the beginning of the New Year.  I believe there are many reasons to anticipate a bright 2010, including an exciting season of events with the Los Angeles and Orange County Washington & Lee Alumni Chapter.

On November 3, 2009, more than 20 Alumni gathered in downtown Los Angeles to discuss the present and future state of the Chapter and begin to organize a new leadership team.  Tom Lovell joined us from the Alumni Office, as did previous leadership members from Los Angeles and Orange County.  Above all, the meeting resonated with a sense of enthusiasm and a desire for renewed activity and involvement.  We all agreed that the opportunities available to us are virtually limitless and we are excited at the prospect of a vibrant Chapter community.

Since the kick-off meeting, Tom has worked with interested members to organize a new leadership team consisting of 9 Alumni:

This team, along with Tom Lovell and John Klinedinst, met in Century City on January 13, 2010 to discuss (among other items) the purpose of the Chapter, Chapter goals, increasing participation among Alumni, and Chapter communications.  Since then, I and other member of the leadership team continue to reach out to other Alumni in the Greater Los Angeles Area to learn from their experience and generate additional ideas.  Ultimately, we hope to formalize this process by establishing an advisory group consisting primarily of experienced Alumni to help guide and assist the Chapter and leadership team.  Additionally, we continue to work to incorporate the views of these Alumni in shaping the Chapter.  While we currently view the Los Angeles and Orange County Alumni Chapter as covering the entire Greater Los Angeles Area, we and the Alumni Office realize that this is a massive geography that should more appropriately include multiple sub-chapters.  We are currently working on re-establishing Orange County as a stand-alone Alumni Chapter and are in the process of creating a leadership team.

In kicking off the 2010 Chapter events, we are thrilled that the first will be on March 7, 2010 at the Montage Laguna Beach.   Sara Behmerwohld has graciously agreed to host the event at this lavish boutique resort, which will include a wine tasting (selections by the Montage’s own Sommelier) and guest speaker.  Following the tasting, the speaker will be Professor Bill Hamilton from the W&L Biology Department, who is also the Chair of the University Sustainability Committee.  Professor Hamilton will discuss sustainability and the various related initiatives currently underway in Lexington.  Invitations (hard copy and electronic) have already gone out for this event, which will be from 2:00-4:00pm on Sunday, March 7, 2010.  In addition to this event, we look forward to other major events for the year including:  (1) an Admitted Student Reception during the second weekend of April;  (2) the summer send-off for undergraduate and Law School (new and returning) students towards the end of July; and (3) an event to be determined towards the end of the year.  We also look forward to several minor events throughout the area such as broadcasts of W&L sporting events, beach barbecues and Hollywood-based events that showcase Los Angeles’ renowned entertainment industry.  For those who would like to be more involved or would like to suggest a specific activity, please reach out to any member of the Chapter Leadership Team.

To keep up with the latest activity in the Chapter, you can visit the W&L Alumni Chapter’s homepage and follow the links for the latest news or Los Angeles and Orange County Chapter blog, which should be available very soon.  Also, you can visit and join the “Washington and Lee LA/OC Alumni” page on Facebook, which currently has 45 members and all relevant information for the Chapter.  Going forward, we intend to reserve hard copy letters and invitations for special events only, and will rely primarily on electronic communications and the telephone.  In keeping with this “paperless” initiative, please take a moment to update your contact information in Colonnade Connections on the University Website.
